CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Two people bird watching in Cape Coral had a very different experience after being attacked by two dogs.
The dog attack happened in a vacant lot on NW 25th Terrace on Friday. The area, full of vacant lots, is a popular spot for bird watchers to congregate to catch a glimpse of rare birds that typically nest in the area.
“The area where they went it’s kind of a desolate area so that’s where your wildlife is,” said Vice President of the Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife Pascha Donaldson. “Everywhere birders go is where no one else is because when there’s people, animals tend to disappear.”
A witness choosing to stay anonymous said he saw a car pull up to the vacant lots Friday with six dogs hopping out.
“I went to let out my dog and I see six, big black dogs — German Shepherds — walking down the street,” the witness said. “I saw it coming. I saw six big dogs, two people, no leash. It was a disaster waiting to happen.”
According to an incident report from the Cape Coral Police Department, a pack of six or eight dogs approached the couple. Two of them charged at the birders, knocking them to the ground.
The report said another witness and the dogs owner jumped in the middle of the attack to break it up. The victims suffered puncture wounds to their legs and calves while also sustaining injuries to their ears as a result of the attack.
The victims refused a ride in the ambulance due to coronavirus concerns, the report states. The dogs were up to date on their shots, but it is currently unclear what happened to the dogs and the owners.
Donaldson and neighbors said residents must respect the city’s leash laws in hopes an attack like that doesn’t happen again.
“The law is you have to have your dog on a leash. No matter where you’re at,” said Donaldson.
