MEADOWLANDS, MN -- The Sax-Zim Bog, located about an hour northwest of Duluth, is seeing its annual migration of not only birds, but many photographers in search of them.
This year, the pandemic is forcing people to get outside and find new hobbies.
Photographer of 15 years Arlene Olson, who lives in west-central Minnesota, makes the long drive north to Sax-Zim Bog each winter.
"I don't see the right birds," Olson said. "I have to keep coming back and hunting for new species, new ones to me."
She said she loves to come enjoy the peace and quiet of the forest.
This year she's noticed many new additions to the sanctuary, and a lot more people.
"I've noticed there are more and more feeders this year. I'm thinking there is more revenue because there are more birding people," added Olson.
Olson credits the pandemic for driving people to get outside.
And talking with new bird watcher Sue Kvendru, Olson is right.
"It was really the pandemic that got me watching bird sites, and looking for some different things to do," said Kvendru.
Kvendru, who is from the Twin Cities, said the idea of getting into bird watching came to her when she was looking out the window of her new home office.
"I love watching birds out of my basement, now that that's where I work from," added Kvendru.
She said her first time to Sax-Zim Bog has been amazing, and she suggest more people try bird watching too.
"Absolutely, It's beautiful, even just walking in the woods. It's so quiet and peaceful even if you don't see a bird, it's just beautiful. That's what we like to do, walk, walk in nature," Kvendru said.
