MOORESVILLE, NC — Bird lovers near Mooresville will soon have an opportunity to contribute to what is known about global bird populations. The annual Great Backyard Bird Count returns this year for four days in February.

"Over these four days we invite people to spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them to us," organizers of the Great Backyard Bird Count said. "These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations."

The count, a census of birds in the Western Hemisphere, will be conducted from Friday, Feb. 12 through Sunday, Feb. 14, 2021. This year marks the 23rd year of the event organized by Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Birds Canada and the National Audubon Society.

This year in Mooresville, the Mooresville Public Library is participating. "Each year people from around the world come together to watch, county, learn about and celebrate birds," the library said. Beginning Feb. 1, the library will have a DIY seed kit, bird log and instructions for the count for participants to pick up at the Circulation desk.

How To Participate:

  • Count birds anywhere you like for at least 15 minutes—or for as long as you wish. Keep track of the kinds of birds you see and how long you watched.
  • Make your best estimate of how many birds you saw of each species. For example, 5 Northern Cardinals, 3 American Crows. Huge flocks may be a challenge, but your best guess is still valuable.
  • Enter your list online.
  • Identify birds with Merlin Bird ID app and add sightings to your list
  • Use the eBird Mobile app
  • Enter your bird list on the eBird website

Say organizers: "All you need is a free Cornell Lab account to participate. This account is shared with Merlin, eBird, Project FeederWatch and other projects at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. If you already have an account please use the same username and password for submitting your bird list for the Great Backyard Bird Count."

In 2020, more than 268,000 bird watchers in 194 countries counted more than 27 million birds of nearly 7,000 species, according to organizers.
