On Saturday, January 30, Nigerian pirates freed six Ukrainian sailors - crew members of the Stevia cargo ship. This was announced by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky on his Instagram page.
"Today, 6 Ukrainian sailors - members of the crew of the Stevia ship, who were held in pirate captivity in Nigeria for a month and a half, were released. Our citizens are safe, we are waiting for their early return to their homeland," the president wrote.
Zelensky thanked the Ukrainian diplomats who negotiated to return the prisoners to their homeland.
In December last year, the cargo ship Stevia was attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea near the coast of Nigeria. Pirates kidnapped eight crew members.
Among the eight hostages, six are Ukrainians (captain, chief mate, 2nd mate, chief mech, electrician and viper).
The vessel, registered in Cameroon, was en route from southern Nigeria to Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire when it was attacked.
This was the 27th kidnapping case in the region in 2020, with 138 people abducted by pirates, according to the analyst report.
