Rare bird appears in Lancaster County, and bird-watchers have flocked to spot it - PennLive

Orioles aren’t an uncommon sight in our region, unless they happen to be bright yellow.

But LNP reported that a Scott’s oriole has been sighted in Lancaster County, far outside of its usual native habitat of the southwestern United States. The bird’s bright coloring immediately made it stand out among the more muted orange hues of local oriole species.

According to LNP, the bird was first spotted in January near Kirkwood by members of the Plain family as it visited their bird feeders. While they recognized the bird’s unusual coloring, it wasn’t until word spread to Lancaster County’s birding community that they realized just how rare the bird was.

Ted Nichols II, first vice president of the Lancaster County Bird Club, told Lancaster Online that this is the first time a Scott’s oriole has ever been officially spotted in Lancaster County, and only the second time the species has ever been seen in Pennsylvania.

Hundreds of bird-watchers have since come to the area, some traveling from out of state, to try and spot the bird since its appearance became known to birding groups.

“Just mixing it up and seeing something different keeps the hobby interesting,” Nichols told the publication.
