BOISE, Idaho – Nicole Bird, the longest-tenured women's golf head coach in Boise State history, is stepping down from her position, effective May 17.
"I really want to thank the athletic department for my time here, and all the student-athletes, past and present, that I have had the privilege to coach," Bird said. "With the entire team returning next season, I feel like this program is in a great position moving forward, and this decision is what is best for it to continue growing."
Bird had led the Broncos since being hired prior to the 2007-08 season.
"I would like to thank Coach Bird for her time mentoring the student-athletes that have come through this program for the last 14 seasons," Boise State Director of Athletics Jeramiah Dickey said. "The young women she has brought to Boise State have excelled not only in competition, but also off the course and in the classroom, and I would like to wish her the best of luck in her next endeavors."
Six of the 12 team tournament championships in school history came under Bird's tenure, as did eight of the program's 17 individual titles. Additionally, nine of the top-10 career scoring averages belong to golfers that played under Bird, and the school records for single-season individual scoring average, team scoring average, individual low round, team low round, individual tournament score, team tournament score, single-season individual top-10 finishes, single-season individual top-25 finishes, individual career top-10 finishes and individual career top-15 finishes were established under Bird's guidance.
In 2014-15, then-sophomore Genevieve Ling became just the second individual in school history to earn an invitation to the NCAA Women's Golf Regional Championships, and the first since 1999-2000. Ling garnered all-conference honors that season, one of five student-athletes to earn postseason recognition under Bird. The list also includes Iris Ocariza (2008-09), Hayley Young (2010-11 and 2012-13), Samantha Martin (2013-14) and Tara Finigan (2018-19).
Academically, the program recorded a perfect Graduation Success Rate in each of Bird's 14 seasons, and received a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for having a perfect Academic Progress Rate score in each of the previous seven seasons. In the last release of the APR, May of 2020, the women's golf team posted its ninth-straight perfect single-year score, the longest streak for a Bronco athletic program.
