The Birds are almost back in town, but the Limes beat them to it this year.
The city of St. Paul has authorized up to 2,000 electric kick-start scooters, or e-scooters, to hit the streets this season, beginning with the extension of Lime and Bird agreements from last year. Bird first rolled into the capital city’s streets unbidden in 2018, forcing tricky licensing negotiations with City Hall. The e-scooters have since become a ubiquitous presence, and generated a variety of public reaction.
The 2020 agreements allowed San Francisco-based Lime and Santa Monica-based Bird Co. to each deploy up to 500 scooters in St. Paul, with an option for the vendors to request a fleet increase of up to 1,000 scooters. Lime last year requested a fleet increase from 500 to 700 scooters, and that request was approved.
Lime is currently operating within their authorized fleet size of 700. Bird, which has not yet deployed scooters, has not requested an increase to its fleet size.
As for bike sharing, City Hall remains open to dialogue, but it hasn’t hosted a bike-sharing company since the 2018 riding season. Nice Ride and LimeBike both declined to return in 2019.
“No bike sharing contacts or vendors for this year, but St. Paul Public Works welcomes interested vendors to contact us to discuss further,” said Lisa Hiebert, a St. Paul Public Works spokesperson, in an email Friday.
