Statues of Hannah Duston, an English colonist whose frenzied escape from captivity in the 17th century became legend, have been swept up in the US debate around racism and public monuments.

Duston and another woman, Mary Neff, were taken captive in 1697 by Native Americans, who raided the English settlement of Haverhill in Massachusetts. While Duston’s husband spirited eight of the couple’s children to safety, one of Duston’s babies was brutally killed, according to legend, prompting her to take bloody revenge by butchering her indigenous captors.

Historians, campaigners, Native Americans and Duston’s descendents, however, have questioned the veracity of the tale, prompting the Haverhill city council to vote to amend its statue of Duston, by removing the hatchet in her hand and updating the inscription,
