Area residents are invited out to Moraine State Park later this week to learn more about one of the most unusual birds in Pennsylvania.

A program focusing on the American Woodcock will be presented on Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Pavilion 7 McDanel’s Launch Area on the North Shore.

Also known as the timberdoodle, night partridge, bigeye, bogsucker, or mudsnipe, this very vocal bird has seen a dramatic decline over the past decades due to loss of habitat. A habitat management biologist with the Wildlife Management Institute will talk about habitat work being done at Moraine as well as money available for habitat improvement on private land.

Those planning to participate are asked to bring binoculars, warm clothes, and field footwear. People of all ages are welcome but preregistration is required by calling the park office due to a maximum of 25 participants permitted as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.
