BIRD BANDING: Nature center brings families together for conservation event - KTTC

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- With the return of spring comes the return of nature.

Sunday at Quarry Hill Nature Center, visitors helped study nature while seeing birds up close.

Those who flocked to the bird banding event Sunday afternoon learned how to safely trap, handle and release wild birds.

The process does not hurt the birds before they are sent back on their way. It also provides useful conservation data.

"Birds happen to be amazing environmental indicators. They give us clues about air quality, water quality and nature in general. We learn about the birds and in turn about the environment," said Jill Danielsen, Quarry Hill program coordinator. "It also happens to be super fun! Where do you get a chance to hold a live bird in your hand? It's a terrific way to connect kids to nature."

The most common birds caught this time of year at the nature center are song birds. However, Danielsen says it is a great time to hold the event as many migratory species return to the area.

If you missed out on the fun this week, the event will be held again the next two Sundays.
