ALBANY — Bears are emerging from their winter dens and they are hungry.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation is urging New Yorkers to avoid conflicts with the famished foragers by cutting off access to food.
Taking down bird feeders and making sure trash cans are secure can limit the interest of bears, DEC says. The state said New Yorkers should do both tasks by April 1.
DEC says it has already received reports of bear sightings upstate, noting they rely on sensitive noses to find their way to food. Bird feeders, pet food and garbage are high on the ursine list of favorites.
Intentionally feeding bears is illegal.
Creating an environment that encourages bears to snoop around for meals can ultimately lead to their deaths.
DEC will often tranquilize and remove bears that wander into populated areas, but bears that make return trips are sometimes euthanized over concerns they have lost their fear of humans.
