HUDSON — Two deputies shot a knife-wielding man who repeatedly stabbed a woman he was holding captive, said Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco.
The incident is being classified as a case of domestic violence and took place about 1:20 p.m. Saturday in a residential area at Hicks Road and Akers Lane near Sunrise Acres.
Deputies were answering a report of a disturbance called in to 911. They arrived at a “dilapidated” house, Nocco said. There were several tents around it where transients lived, the sheriff said. There were several people on the property and inside the house.
Deputies entered the rear of the home. It was “very tight quarters,” Nocco said, with debris piled up inside the home.
They saw three people: One was a bleeding woman, lying on a bed; a man wielding a knife; and another woman.
“She was absolutely covered in blood, like a horror movie,” Nocco said of the injured woman.
The man held a knife to her throat, the agency said.
Deputies repeatedly ordered the man to drop the knife, Nocco said.
Instead, the sheriff said, the man started screaming and motioned toward the injured woman on the bed.
That’s when the two deputies shot him, Nocco said, fearing he would further injure the woman.
The Sheriff’s Office would not say if the man was killed in the shooting, however.
Sheriff’s spokesman Amanda Hunter told the Tampa Bay Times the agency cannot disclose that information because the deputies’ actions are being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. A spokeswoman for the state agency said she no information to share about the incident.
The deputies’ body-worn cameras captured the shooting, but Nocco said state law prohibits him from releasing the footage because it was filmed inside a home.
The injured woman suffered 15 or more stab wounds and was “critically” wounded, the agency said. Deputies applied a tourniquet to stop her bleeding, then paramedics arrived to take her to the hospital. No deputies were injured.
She told deputies that the knife-wielding man was keeping her trapped inside the residence “all day long” against her will, Nocco said.
The Sheriff’s Office did not release the name of the man accused of stabbing the woman, but said they were in a “close personal relationship.” The man also had a prior arrest for domestic battery.
The injured woman’s medical condition was not disclosed. The Sheriff’s Office did not release her name. Nor did it release the names of the deputies who fired their weapons or say whether they have been placed on leave.
Akers Lane was blocked off by several sheriff’s cruisers late Saturday. Beyond the flashing lights were two small homes on the dirt road.
The shooting is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney’s Office. The sheriff did not say who called 911, but said there were others inside the home and on the property who must have known what was happening to the woman.
“It baffles me that there are people there, that this woman is being stabbed, this woman is possibly dying ... and nobody is willing to step up (to protect her),” he said. “We can’t be the first ones to know that this was happening. People there must have known.”
The sheriff noted that, while his deputies were dealing with the stabbing attack and hostage situation, calls reporting incidents of domestic violence continued to come in Saturday.
“Domestic violence is sadly a reality in every community,” Nocco said. “It goes on every day. It is a sad cycle we need to continue to break.”
