ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Rochester Township is home to one of the last few, if not the last, rookeries of blue herons in southeastern Minnesota outside the Mississippi River Valley.
This rookery (a place for birds to mate and nest) sits off 60th Avenue SW. It's also where plans for a private development included a road that would cut right through the habitat.
In response, Leal Segura, whose family has owned the property half the habitat sits on for decades, and others in the community started a "Save the Rookery" Facebook group to bring attention to the matter.
The group has more than 110 members.
Segura said these birds have been in the habitat for decades as she remembers them as a little kid.
"This is valuable to us and it's not just value while these herons are mating, nesting and producing their eggs, but it is every year," Segura said. "This is the type of thing the community wants protected and we've had an outpouring of support from the community. I think its because people know this is special and even as a non-bird person, it's easy to see how spectacular it is."
Segura has secured a temporary restraining order against any construction work until more research about the area can be completed.
