WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Godzilla vs. Kong, now in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.

Taking place decades after the events of Kong: Skull Island, the seismic simian is visibly older and larger than he was when first glimpsed in the Vietnam War. Despite this size increase, the giant ape begins Godzilla vs. Kong under the confines of a human outpost rather than roaming in the wild, king of his native jungle domain. And because of Kong's links to humanity at the start of the film, the ape finds himself immediately on the defensive when he first crosses paths with Godzilla.

The end credits sequence for 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters revealed in the environmental upheaval caused by the advent of Titans resurfacing all over the world, Skull Island was becoming increasingly unstable as Titan. In response, Monarch -- an intergovernmental organization tasked with studying kaiju -- set up an observation post on Skull Island to continue to monitor Titan activity in the surrounding area. As Godzilla vs. Kong begins years after the events of King of the Monsters, Monarch has done a lot more than just observe.

The instability affecting Skull Island rendered much of it uninhabitable by the start of Godzilla vs. Kong. To provide Kong with a livable habitat to study the last of the giant apes, Monarch erected a biosphere to house Kong. The giant ape is kept relatively docile by a young girl named Jia, with whom Kong has imprinted upon and formed a protective bond. Despite this, Kong is aware that he is being held captive and routinely strikes out at his highly advanced menagerie. As the scientists observe Kong, they realizing they can't keep such a powerful Titan under confinement forever.

Kong is lightly sedated and chained to a small flotilla of naval ships as they make their way to find a passage into the Hollow Earth where the Titans originally hailed from before emerging on Earth's surface. Jia is part of the voyage to help keep Kong under control when he regains his bearings mid-transit. Notably, Godzilla is never confined or detained by humanity for the entirety of Godzilla vs. Kong. In contrast, Kong is always in sight of either Monarch scientists or the nefarious corporation Apex Cybernetics.

In Godzilla vs. Kong, Kong starts as a Titan without a home, with Skull Island no longer able to properly shelter and provide for him as it had for decades. Humanity manages to save the ape but, ultimately, it's a stop-gap measure until the fight with Godzilla looms into the frame. Godzilla had long been identified as humanity's greatest defender but, with the kaiju going berserk, Kong is conveniently located in human custody to step up and protect them from the rampaging monster.

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film is in theaters and on HBO Max now.
