SALT LAKE CITY — Keepers at the Tracy Aviary have located the red-tailed black cockatoo, who has gone missing at least a couple of times in the last decade.
The bird, known as Matilda, took off with a wind gust while out flying with her keeper on Friday afternoon and was blown outside of aviary property. Matilda was found nearly 24 hours later, after a neighbor reported seeing the bird just a block away, the aviary reported Saturday afternoon.

Efforts to locate the bird, Matilda, who was last seen flying west from the park, had been unsuccessful on Friday.
“She is a strong flyer and she could be several miles away by now,” Aviary officials initially reported. Wind gusts reached up to 20 mph in Salt Lake City on Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
Aviary staff asked the public to keep eyes and ears out for the bird, which ended up leading to her safe rescue.
“That was a long night for everyone involved — it’s naptime,” the aviary posted on Facebook.
Matilda is about 20 inches long, a bit larger than a crow. She is black with orange-red feathers under her tail. She has broad wings in flight and a hooked beak that looks round from afar. Most notable is the feather crest on her head.
The same bird, who is about 9 years old now, has escaped her keepers multiple times, including in 2013 when she was spooked by construction and in early January last year after being chased out of the aviary by an eagle.
Both times — and, after this weekend’s escapade, Matilda was found and reunited with aviary staff.
