CHICO — Birders braved the brisk breeze to behold birds through binoculars.
“That’s the call of a flicker,” Mary Muchowski, executive director of the Altacal Audubon Society pointed out. “Those are sparrows down the road.”
The society hosted a field trip on Saturday morning at the Genetic Resources and Conservation Center. Within two hours, birdwatchers spotted about 30 different types of birds. Muchowski, who has been volunteering with the society for 20 years, led the way.
When she looked up, so did the rest of the group. When she heard a sound, every other ear tuned in. All 10 participants had either binoculars, a camera or both in tow. They spotted mockingbirds, raptors, robins, merlins, red tails and more.
Altacal comes from combining the words “alta,” which “means high or northern,” Muchowski said, and “California.” Altogether, it’s a way to identify this particular group as the northern California chapter of Audubon, a worldwide birdwatching society.
“It is a group of people who just love birds. It’s a shared appreciation,” Paul Lake of the society said. “I’ve been a birder virtually all my life.”
The society is involved in conservation efforts.
“We pay attention to politics that impact birds and the environment,” Lake said. “We try to educate folks about what is important for the future of bird life, especially these days.”
The society had events more often before the pandemic hit, but is now starting to host them more frequently again. There will be several in April and May. The field trips are posted on the society’s Facebook page.
“When you take a little walk like this and pay real close attention, you see far more variety of birds than you realize. You just have to pay attention,” Lake said.
