Sue Bird credits Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd for "saving her career" originally appeared on NBC Sports Northwest
This week, Seattle Storm superstar point guard Sue Bird joined Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson on Showtime’s All The Smoke Podcast.
The basketball trio discussed all things life in the ‘wubble,’ as well as Bird’s basketball journey from high school to winning her fourth WNBA championship with the Storm -- and everything in between.
Bird admitted that after being drafted as the No. 1 overall pick to the Storm in 2002, and growing up and never really leaving the East Coast, she couldn’t believe just how far Seattle was from everything she knew.
It took time for her as a young woman from Long Island and then eventually Queens to call Seattle her home.
But that’s what the Emerald City is now for Bird.
But don’t expect Bird to venture out to any of the neighboring suburbs in the Seattle area.
“If I go to Bellevue, it’s a road trip,” Bird joked.
Bird, who just turned 40 this month, is about to enter her 18th season in the league, technically, since she has missed two seasons with injuries.
She not only showed love to the city of Seattle on the All The Smoke Podcast, she also gave all the love to her teammates Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd.
The 11-time All-Star cited those two as the two young stars that kept her in the game.
Stewart, who was the 2018 MVP, and Loyd, who was one of Seattle’s most consistent scorers this season, have been a big part of the Storm and Bird’s recent success.
There’s no doubt about that.
But it’s more than just winning with those two that keeps Bird on the court in Seattle.
Bird, who has also said she doesn’t think she’s ready to hang it up quite yet, is forever grateful for Stewart and Loyd.
“Her and Jewell both legit saved my career,” Bird added.
And we are all thankful for that!
