RODNEY – Rodney’s Jeff Greene is about as avid of a fisherman as there is in the area, especially when it comes to bluegill fishing.

But Greene admits his fishing is probably on the sidelines right now until the ice season.

For now, in Greene’s hunting world, bird hunting is the ticket.

“I’ve been taking the dogs out bird hunting,” he said. “It’s kind of coming to an end now. I’ve been kind of disappointed with the numbers. I’m primarily a woodcock hunter. I’ve got an old dog and a young dog. I’ve been happy with the young dog but I haven’t seen as many woodcock this year as I have last year.

“The only other guy I talked to is a guy named Al Stewart, game bird specialist for the DNR. He said he’s been seeing a good number of birds this year. The people I talk to in the Mecosta area haven’t had a banner year, put it that way.”

Overall, “they’ve been looking at this at the end of bird season, getting ready for deer season,” Greene said. “I put my boat away and I know a lot of guys do fall fishing. The bluegills I gave up. I’ll wait until the ice season.”
