Local Eats: The Dirty Bird in downtown Jackson is all about chicken and beer - MLive.com

JACKSON, MI -- The Dirty Bird in downtown Jackson is “a fried chicken and beer joint,” said manager Tommy Horvath.

“When you only do fried food, you got to do it well,” Horvath said.

The restaurant has 40 beers on tap, with about 80 percent of the taps being Michigan beers.

“We support a lot of the local breweries,” Horvath said.

The highlight of the menu is the chicken tenders, Horvath said.

“We order our breading from a company out of Detroit,” Horvath said. “It is not anything you are generally going to find around around here."

The chicken tenders are fresh cut every single day and hand breaded.

“It’s always been weird being an adult and getting excited about chicken fingers,” Horvath said. “But it’s what we do and people love them.”

With an outdoor patio and added seating along Michigan Avenue, and an uptick in take-out orders, the restaurant has weathered the coronavirus pandemic well, Horvath said.

“We have added an extra phone to get more calls answered,” he said.

Horvath is thankful to the Jackson community for its patronage.

“The support we have has been unbelievable,” he said. “We have been fully staffed since we reopened. There was never a down time... It hasn’t stopped for us.”

The Dirty Bird is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 11 a.m. to midnight Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and noon to 1 a.m. on Saturday. It’s closed Sunday. The kitchen closes earlier than the bar, usually by an hour or two. Call 517-395-4479. More info can be found at https://www.dirtybirdjackson.com/
