Hello, friends.
The Orioles have done it! That is, they finally won a game after dropping six in a row. For a while on Saturday night it felt like they were going to drop a seventh straight game, but a clutch Anthony Santander home run tied the game late and the team turned a 4-3 deficit heading into the bottom of the 10th inning into a 5-4 walkoff win. Check out Drew Bonifant’s recap of the game for the lovely totals, and don’t forget to vote in the MBP poll.
The good feelings from the 12-8 start have been lost, but as bad as the last week was, the Orioles are only a game out of the expanded playoffs at this moment. If they dust themselves off after having lost all those games, they can hang around. Their 13-14 record is the “first out.” The Blue Jays, at 13-12, are the #8 seed.
Getting back up to .500 today would be a nice start towards keeping themselves in the picture. The Orioles really need to punish a Red Sox pitching staff that was reeling heading into this series. They haven’t done it yet.
They need to do this just on general principle, because those pitchers have not been good and because they’re the Red Sox, but they also need to do it because they’ll probably need the runs. Wade LeBlanc is the Orioles starter for today’s 1:05 finale. He has not yetbeen good this season either. Zack Godley, who has a 6.87 ERA through his first 18.1 innings of 2020, takes the mound for a Red Sox.

More on Smith’s designation and the trade deadline (School of Roch)
Mike Elias and Brandon Hyde did a video call separately with the beat writers about yesterday’s transaction and other topics. There’s a lot of the standard fare.
Elias talks about Mountcastle and the possibility of adding other prospects (Baltimore Baseball)
“Any of the guys that are at Bowie right now that are upper level, Double-A, Triple-A guys, they all have a chance to get called up this year,” Elias said. Dean Kremer was one player he specifically referenced.

The return of Cedric Mullins has gone better than some of his previous visits.
Orioles approaching unique trade deadline still focused on ‘broader picture’ of building for future (Baltimore Sun)
Anybody could still be traded, like Richard Bleier was, even if the O’s start to turn back around in the standings.
Tim Cossins pleased with progress of Pedro Severino, Chance Sisco (Press Box)
The only Orioles catcher anyone wanted to think about heading into 2020 was prospect Adley Rutschman. Severino and Sisco have reminded us they’re still here, too.
Birthdays and Orioles anniversaries
Today in 2002, the Orioles came back from a 6-0 deficit against the Blue Jays to win, 11-7, and improve their record to 63-63. The team infamously went 4-32 over their last 36 games.
It’s the 30th birthday of recent Orioles prospect Mike Yastrzemski, traded for peanuts at the end of spring training last year, who has accumulated 4.5 bWAR in MLB since.
Also born today: 2004 two-game pitcher Denny Bautista, 2005 reserve Alejandro Freire, 2001 six-gamer Casey Blake, 2002 two-game catcher Raul Casanova, 1980-88 pitcher Mike Boddicker, 1965-66 six-game pitcher Ed Barnowski, 1968 reliever John Morris, and 1957 infielder and Baseball Hall of Famer George Kell.
Is today your birthday? Happy birthday to you! Your birthday buddies for today include: ill-fated French king Louis XVI (1754), actor Gene Kelly (1912), actor River Phoenix (1970), and basketballer Kobe Bryant (1978).
On this day in history...
In 79, traditional history states that Mount Vesuvius began to stir, coinciding with the feast day for Vulcan, the Roman god of fire, before an eruption the next day on the 24th. Modern reckoning, however, suggests the big eruption was no earlier than October 17.
In 1775, Britain’s King George III delivered a proclamation which stated that the North American colonies were in open rebellion.
In 1939, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, in which they agreed to non-aggression. The Nazis did not keep up the pact, and on the same day in 1942, the Battle of Stalingrad began.
In 1973, a bank robbery in Stockholm turned into a five-day hostage situation, after which the term “Stockholm syndrome” was coined.
In 2011, there was a magnitude 5.8 earthquake in Virginia. You probably remember where you were if you felt it.

And that’s the way it is in Birdland. Have a safe Sunday. Go O’s!
