Winter brings its own special opportunities for birdwatching in Michigan.
This is the season for rare visitors such as snowy owls, and new backyard feathered friends like dark-eyed juncos and winter finches. Winter is also a great time for waterfowl watching, as huge groups of ducks and geese gather on open waters in the Great Lakes.
Another chance to bring out your binoculars this season: Winter feeder surveys. These counts simply require that participants track the birds that visit their backyards, which can help researchers better understand wild birds’ winter behavior and the health of these populations. Organizers say this data can be valuable for protecting both the birds and their habitats.
Two feeder surveys — Cornell University’s international Project FeederWatch, and Kalamazoo Nature Center’s Michigan-based Winter Feeder Count — are currently underway and open to participants.

Project FeederWatch, Cornell University: This international program “turns your love of feeding birds into scientific discoveries.” Running through spring 2024, it includes its own app and does not require a bird feeder to participate. New this year, participants have the ability to track backyard mammal sightings, too. More information and details on how to join can be found online here.
