The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department shared how a rare bird was spotted in Texas for the first time ever.
Brandon Nooner/TPWDA rare bird was spotted in Texas for the first time ever, according to a post on X (formally known as Twitter) from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department on Monday, November 27. The gray-collared becard was seen at Resaca de la Palma State Park in Brownsville, TPWD said.
The species was first sighted in the U.S. in 2009, according to TPWD. The second was just six months ago in May 2023. Brandon Nooner, who works as a wildlife biologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, snapped the photo of the bird perched on a tree branch at Palma State Park.
The scarce bird loves tropical forests and woodlands, according to eBird. It's usually found living in northwestern Mexico, specifically in the eastern Sonora area, as well as El Salvador and Nicaragua, according to a report published by the American Birding Association.
