While beachgoers are out enjoying their Memorial Day Weekend, they may spot something new along the shores.

Audubon Mississippi cut the ribbon on a new Coastal Bird Storyboard sign along Beach Boulevard in Harrison County. The signs are placed to educate beach goers about the unique beach-nesting birds that visit Coastal Mississippi every Summer. Audubon Mississippi Stewardship Manager Melinda Averhart said, “In 2019, we received a Gulf of Mexico Energy Securities Act Grant from DMR and that has allowed us to create this wonderful, basically a nature-based tourism project.”

Audubon partnered with local painter Tami Curtis and poet/writer Perry Guy to create visually appealing storyboards that now stretch along 26 miles of the beach. Curtis said, “We all know that when we see art or we read poetry there is something that sinks in our hearts. That’s why art and poetry have been around forever. So, Audubon was smart enough to bring that about and incorporate that along with scientific information about each one of these birds to station them along.”

“I think that Tami’s artwork is super eye-catching and so I think that that alone will draw someone in and hopefully they can read the signs and learn some facts about the birds and the areas that they use.”

The Mississippi Audubon currently has six signs on display along the Coast. They are looking to add an additional six signs. Each sign located on the Coast showcases a different bird that either lives here or is migrating through the area. “So, Mississippi has about two billion birds that migrate through in spring and about four billion that migrate through in the fall. So, we host really large year-round populations of birds that really need just a little bit of space to survive and thrive.”

Averhart feels the signs will be a big boost to Audubon’s ongoing efforts to educate locals. “Most people don’t know how just really simple actions can harm our Coastal birds. So, I would say that if you see an area that’s marked with signs or posts, please just keep your distance from those areas.”
