Larry Bird was trending on Twitter Sunday.
In the catastrophefest that is 2020, basketball fans held their collective breaths as they clicked hoping the Celtics’ legend and former Indiana Pacers’ coach wasn’t in the news for anything related to coronavirus or any other tragedy.
They breathed easier amid chuckles when they learned the real reason. Bird isn’t sick or dead and he didn’t take a controversial stand on anything political. In fact he didn’t do anything other than look like himself on the same day a tomato on social media also resembled him.
Faithful believers have long drawn inspiration from the perceived appearance of religious iconography in clouds, vegetables, burn patterns in toast, etc.
Bird doesn’t quite reach biblical reverence, but the devotion the Naismith Memorial Hall of Famer in Boston and Indiana approached religious fervor during his apex in the 1980s.
Someone named Paul, whose Twitter handle is @BingoWings14, (presumably because BingoWIngs1 through BingoWings13 were already taken) first posted the tomato, which resembles post-mustache Larry Bird, similar to his current look and the one he had late in his Celtics career and his tenure coaching the Indiana Pacers. It’s scrunchy wrinkles and unremarkable size would have limited it’s success on the farm fair circuit, but unlike most blue ribbon honorees, it resembled a member of the original Dream Team.
The picture he posted to Twitter of the Birdmato has the famous-faced fruit in what looks like a small-sized wide-brimmed hat.
The tomato appeared almost exactly a year after Bird’s last bizarre appearance in the headlines when Bird used legal action to ask a mural of him in Indianapolis remove tattoos from the image of him, including those of mating rabbits, as Bird does not have body art.
The tomato joins Oklahoma’s Brady Manek among recent lookalikes for the ex-Celtic.
Naturally Twitter had fun:
