Monthly club presentation to focus on bird migration - Broomfield Enterprise

jawawuts.blogspot.com

The Broomfield Bird Club is meeting via Zoom on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for a free presentation on bird migration. Naturalist Martin Ogle will give an hour-long talk on “Some stay, some go! – migrator and homebody birds of our area.” Ogle is the education coordinator for Lafayette Open Space and is responsible for creating Lafayette’s annual Fun Festival.

“Celebrating migratory birds,” Ogle said. “We will explore all the birds who leave Colorado and take these long fantastic voyages or which ones will take short, altitudinal trips. We will find out why they leave and how they leave. We will also talk about the birds which stay around all year, where you can find them, and where you can find birds stopping by our Colorado water ways to eat and then continue on to our Colorado mountains, or continue on to Canada or to the north most regions, and, conversely, come back through Colorado on their way to warmer climates.”

Ogle will also talk about the upcoming ninth annual Migration Festival on Sept. 18.

Ogle received a bachelor’s of science degree in wildlife biology from Colorado State University in 1982 and his master’s degree in wildlife science at Virginia Tech two years later. He had a 27-year career as chief naturalist for the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority from 1985 through 2012. His interest in bird migration dates back to his participation in a Bald Eagle research project on Chesapeake Bay in the mid-1980s.

He has been the education coordinator for Lafayette Open Space since 2013 and spearheaded the effort for the designation of Lafayette as Colorado’s first “Bird City.” He also started Lafayette’s “Celebrating Migratory Birds” Festival.
