The Penn State Berks Freyberger Gallery will present “Bird Call: Studies and Actions Dedicated to Biodiversity,” an intermedia exhibition that blends 2d and 3d works by local artists and study participants in an expanded wunderkammer, alongside time-based works by contemporary new media artists. The exhibition runs from May 2–May 14, 2022, with an opening reception from 6–8 p.m., Thursday, May 5, 2022. This event is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be provided.
This exhibition forms out of the collaborative and interdisciplinary research project of Penn State Berks faculty members Bryan Wang, associate teaching professor of biology; Sandy Feinstein, professor of English and coordinator of the honors program; and Samantha Kavky, associate professor of art history; along with Penn State Lehigh Valley faculty member David Livert, professor of psychology. Faculty worked in partnership with Berks Nature, Baird Ornithological Club, and VOiCEup Berks. Their study encourages the public to use the tools of science and art to experience and engage with the natural world – beginning with birds. After observing how birds look, sound, and behave, participants created artwork to represent their thoughts and feelings about birds and the environment as a way of celebrating both birds and biodiversity.
New media artists include Tess Elliot, Derek G. Larson, Charlie Tweed, Eli Michael Stine, and Becky Brown. Berks community artists include Ari and Linda Bloom, Marykate Cotter, Jane deGruchy, Dorothy Delong, Nicolas Fay, Jo Frable, Jeff Gernsheimer, Bradley Hartline, Stephanie Hartline, Kathryn Kundrat, Trudy Moore, Ryan Palmatier, Lisa Schnell, Kelsey Showalter, Safitaj Sindhar, Martha Ressler, and Christine Summy. The exhibition will also include a virtual display of work from youth in programs delivered in partnership with Youth Volunteer Corps of Reading, Baird Ornithological Club, and Berks Nature.
The Freyberger Gallery is open 12–4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and Saturday. For more information, contact Kevin Brophy, gallery coordinator, at 610-396-6140 or [email protected].
