Bird flu quarantine ends at David Traylor Zoo - KVOE

jawawuts.blogspot.com

If you have visited the David Traylor Zoo over the past week, you have probably seen more birds out and about than you have seen the previous two months.

The birds were moved into quarantine to reduce any potential contact with the highly pathogenic avian influenza. Zoo Director Lisa Keith says “things are slowing down” at this time, so the birds are back out.

Keith says birds were quarantined in “closed-top” areas. Birds also got foot baths when they entered and left their cages. Keith did not report any issues with any of the birds at the zoo.

This latest run of bird flu has been pretty sporadic across Kansas. Cases were confirmed in Dickinson and Franklin counties near the KVOE listening area, but nothing was confirmed in Lyon or surrounding counties. The flu was a health and business concern because it has affected all kinds of birds in all kinds of settings, from the wild to commercial operations.

In unrelated zoo news, Keith will announce the winners in the “Name the Wine/Name the Whiskey” contest on KVOE’s Morning Show at 8:20 am Tuesday.
