Since 1935, New Jersey’s official state bird has been the adorable, yellow-coated American goldfinch.
#!@& that, Gov. Phil Murphy said Friday.
The Democratic governor announced he signed an executive order — yes, Republicans, another one — designating a new state bird: the middle finger.
“It is important for State symbols to reflect New Jersey’s culture and values,” Murphy wrote in the order, appropriately revealed via tweet. “New Jersey drivers are famous for their skills, enthusiasm, and expressive hand gestures.”
Really? Well ...
“HAPPY APRIL FOOL’S,” the governor wrote at the end of the order, released April 1, 2022.
To some, New Jersey has a reputation for profanity. Others would say it’s an unfortunate stereotype.
This isn’t the first time Murphy’s team has joked about it. Last year, during the governor’s re-election campaign, the state Democratic Party released a video mocking Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli for once supporting an ordinance banning public cursing in his hometown of Raritan.
Friday’s joke drew mixed reactions.
Of course, Murphy actually grew up in Massachusetts, another state known for angry drivers and their colorful hand gestures.
New York has also laid claim to this state bird.
This all comes as Murphy is isolating at home after testing positive for COVID-19 on Thursday. The 64-year-old governor is experiencing “minor symptoms,” his office told NJ Advance Media on Friday.
