The Broomfield Bird Club is hosting Hannah Jakob from the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies (Barr Lake) for its free monthly Zoom presentation on Tuesday. Jakob will be speaking about “Waterfowl 101,” starting at 7 p.m.

“Birders of any level are welcome to join and it will be a great refresher for anyone planning on birding this spring,” Jakob said. “I will go over the general characteristics of waterfowl and what different bird groups make up waterfowl. Proceeding that will be a more in-depth overview of different species we will encounter here in Colorado and how we can identify them. I will outline the different methods of identification and what to look for when they are both in flight and on the water. My hope is to familiarize the audience with our common waterfowl and give them the tools to do their own identification in the future.”

Jakob, who is an environmental educator at the Bird Conservancy, is also an Americorps member serving at the BCR. She’s also an artist and illustrator.

Jakob grew up in Missoula, Montana, where she developed a passion for wildlife and environmental conservation. She graduated from the Soka University of America in 2021 with a B.A. in environmental studies. Jakob loves to paint, and for her senior thesis, she investigated “art” as a tool for wildlife conservation by creating a tool with her own scientific illustrations. She loves sharing her appreciation for birds and all things natural with the people around her and is looking forward to sharing and exploring with schools and families in the Denver area.

Broomfield Bird Club is a social club, open to anyone interested in finding out more about birds and their habitats. We are completely an all-volunteer board and registered as a nonprofit organization. Our yearly dues are $20 per family, which is used mostly for speakers and to support bird-related local rehabs. Presentations are held every second Tuesday of the month (with exceptions), and bird walks every second Saturday of the month, with intermittent bird walks whenever someone would like to lead.
