Adlai Olson is the new Director of Rehabilitation for Wild Bird Rescue.

She comes from Louisiana where she earned a degree in biology from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and is a certified Veterinary Technician. She worked with a wide variety of wildlife during her time at Tails of Nature Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Lafayette.

The local nonprofit had stopped taking in new cases for a short time after the previous director left and the facility needed to re-establish its permits.

Rehabilitation of wild birds is regulated by state law and overseen by state and government agencies, including the Texas Parks and Wildlife and the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife.

In the interim, the birds already on site were cared for under the guidance of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

"Basically we want to get our facility back to where it needs to be. Organized, clean, repaired, so that we can take in birds and rehabilitate them to the best of our ability, and to be able to give them a safe and stable environment for them to be able to be released back into the wild," said Olson.

Common songbirds as well as hawks, owls, falcons and other types of birds are brought in with a variety of injuries or illness.

Storms can blow nests from trees or blow birds into fixed objects, many are struck by vehicles and some come in suffering from illness.

"I have completely fallen in love with this place in the month and a half that I've been here," Olson said.

The organization is always in need of help and there is a new volunteer program and financial donations are greatly appreciated. For information on volunteering, go to volunteer@wildbirdrescuewf.org

Wild Bird Rescue also has a list of household items they welcome such as liquid laundry detergent, bleach, bath towels, sheets, wipes, trash bags, plastic dishes or bowls and more.

"The thing that I'm most excited about is to show the public that we're here, because a lot of people don't know that, get the word out, we're here, come volunteer, come get experience with wildlife, and come make a difference," said Olson.

"Taking care of a wild animal and releasing it back into the wild is one of the best feelings that you could ever feel," Olson added.
