Frightening video captured flames spewing out of a Ryanair plane’s engine after a collision with a flock of herons while on approach to an airport in Italy.
The long-legged, long-necked birds were sucked into an engine of the Boeing 737 moments before the flight from London Stansted Airport landed in Bologna about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Independent.
Other herons that missed the spinning intake also met a similar fate when they ended up splattered on the cockpit windshield, severely obscuring the pilots’ view with their bloody carcasses, images posted by Breaking Aviation News show.
Other grisly photos show bird parts stuck in the engine and on a lowered flap on the left wing.
No one was hurt in the incident and the crew managed to bring the aircraft down safely at Guglielmo Marconi Airport.
Bird strikes, which occur mostly shortly after takeoffs and before landings, are estimated to cost airlines over $1 billion a year in damage and delays, the Independent reported.
In October, a Ryanair flight that departed from Manchester Airport en route to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands was forced to make an emergency landing in Liverpool after a bird hit an engine.
“The aircraft landed normally and customers were transferred to a replacement aircraft which departed to Lanzarote following a short delay of approximately one hour,” an airline spokesperson said at the time.
