It’s no surprise there were mixed feelings about the West Virginia Power’s name change to the Charleston Dirty Birds. But when one St. Albans fan heard the news, he knew what he wanted to do: get a tattoo of the Dirty Bird.
Less than a day after Tuesday's unveiling of the new logo -- a yellow canary with a hard hat -- Cole Parsons called Two One Tattoo in Sissonville to make an appointment. Initially, the artist told Parsons he was booked until November. But after hearing what Parsons wanted a tattoo of, he found the time to squeeze him in.
“We kinda had a little bit of a joke going that we broke a world record for possibly the world’s first Dirty Bird tattoo,” Parsons said.
On Thursday night, a Gazette-Mail staffer tweeted a picture of Parsons' new tattoo, which caught the eye of the baseball team's Twitter account. The tattoo landed him free season tickets for next season and some beer vouchers.

Growing up a few miles outside of Charleston means Parsons is no stranger to the baseball scene. When asked his favorite mascot from the team’s history, he answered without hesitation: the Alley Cats.
So far, the feedback Parsons has received since getting the canary tattooed on his thigh has been positive, and has stirred up some laughter among his friends.
Parsons doesn’t have a social media presence, so he said he didn't know the name change had ruffled some feathers until his friends told him about it.
“Personally, I think it’s awesome, I think it’s a really cool mascot, I think it’s pretty unique,” Parsons said.
