Eccentric americans who keep hundreds of tigers in captivity and take their young ones from their mothers to earn thousands of dollar on them.

the documentary series ‘Tiger King’ on Netflix has caused outrage and fascination in the whole world, but the problem with wild tigers, which suffer in captivity, exists, unfortunately, not only in the UNITED states and Asia.

Up to 1.600 tigers living in captivity here in Europe, shows a new report from the international dyrerettighedsorganisation Four Paws.

“It is deeply reprehensible that the legislation in Europe is so poor that there are examples of wild animals like tigers and lions, which are kept by private individuals in their home, or that the animals being used as selfierekvisitter,” says director of World Animal Protection Denmark Gitte Buchhave and continues:

“It should not be legal anywhere in the world, and Europe should take the lead in prohibiting the cruel industry with the trade in wild animals.”

the Report shows that many of Europe’s tigers live in Zoos and animal parks, but there are also big cats that live under the same poor conditions as those who have been viewers of the ‘Tiger King’ to block his eyes.

In the report, among other things, examples of a young lion that was kept as a pet in an apartment in Paris, and an austrian woman, who had two tigerunger in his private home.

Many countries in Europe allow that tigers are being bred and live in captivity. Both in private homes and for use as entertainment in the circus, or to take selfies with.

just Like you see in the documentary series ‘Tiger King’, there will be bred a lot of cubs in a short time. The kids are taken from their mother few days after birth, after which people pay in order to get taken selfies with them.

A practice, such as the World Animal Protection Denmark find highly problematic.

“It is appalling that you speedavler tigers on the cruel show in Europe and the rest of the world, in order that the kids can be taken from their mother few days after birth, in order that they can become accustomed to people, as every day should entertain until they are too big, and then they are replaced with new ones,” says director of the organization Gitte Buchhave.

When the fry are too large, they are sent to Asia, their bones and claws can be used as ingredients in traditional asian medicine, according to the report from the Four Paws.

And even in countries such as Germany, France and Spain there is no legislation around the private keeping of wild animals as tigers, inform World Animal Protection Denmark.

The lack of legislation in Europe, member of the European Parliament and vice-president of the dyrevelfærdsgruppen Niels Fuglsang (S) to call for action.

“This underlines once again that we need new legislation in the EU. I have asked the EUROPEAN Commission whether we should have introduced a common positive list of exotic pets, so we automatically ban all the species in the community, who does not appear on the list. It is obvious that the big cats do not belong in private captivity. It is poor animal welfare, and so, it is also dangerous for us humans,” he says.

Who lives only 3.900 tigers in the wild today.
