The news comes despite warnings from SAGE scientists that the Prime Minister could be risking a second wave by easing the coronavirus lockdown conditions too early. Around 2.2 million people were placed on the Government's shielding list and asked to stay at home as lockdown began.

Most were identified by their GP as being at particularly high risk of needing hospital treatment for coronavirus symptoms.

On Thursday in the daily Downing Street coronavirus briefing, Boris Johnson admitted many vulnerable people were struggling with their strict lockdown and said ministers were "looking carefully at how we can make your life easier".

He added: "We want to release you from your captivity, your lockdown, as fast as we as we possibly can."

Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick is expected to announce the changes to lockdown for some of the vulnerable this afternoon.
