Ball State drops 24-17 decision Saturday evening at Scheumann Stadium

MUNCIE, Ind. – Despite playing in front of a season-best crowd of over 15,000 at Scheumann Stadium to celebrate its 95th Homecoming, Ball State fell to Miami 24-17 Saturday in the annual Red Bird Rivalry.

The Cardinals (4-4, 2-2) snapped a three-game winning streak heading into the matchup.

"It was a disappointing loss and it hurts," Ball State head coach Mike Neu said. "I'm very appreciative of the Homecoming crowd and I'm very thankful for the fans. There were a lot of positive things trending going into today, but it was a tough loss."

The Cardinals turned the ball over twice – once on a fumble on the second series of the game and the second on an interception on the final drive – and were unable to cause a turnover defensively.

"It's tough to lose the turnover battle," Neu added. "We've been so good at that the last three weeks. We certainly had some untimely penalties, too. Right there at the end, we did a good job of driving down the field, but credit No. 21 (Sterling Weatherford) for making a play. We've got to stick together, regroup and move forward."

With the score at 24-17 late in the fourth quarter, Ball State got a stop on defense, forcing Miami (4-4, 3-1) to attempt a 51-yard field goal, which was missed.

The Cardinals then took over at their own 33-yard line and began to put together a drive as Drew Plitt completed passes to Jayshon Jackson and Yo'Heinz Tyler mixed in with a couple of rushes by Will Jones to get the home team into the red zone as the clock was winding down. However, Plitt's pass to the end zone intended for Jackson was picked off by Weatherford to seal the win for the RedHawks.

Plitt finished the night completing 22 of 34 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns – one on a 6-yard pass to Justin Hall to cap a 7-play, 75-yard drive to open the game and the other a 4-yard strike to Jackson midway through the third quarter.

Jackson led the way with eight catches for a career-high 121 yards and a score. Tyler reeled in five catches for 43 yards, while Hall had four grabs for 32 yards. Hall found pay dirt for the fourth consecutive game.

On the ground, Ball State rushed for 100 yards, highlighted by Carson Steele's 49 yards and Jones' 31. Entering the game, Miami had allowed 168 rushing yards total in its last three games.

Defensively, Clayton Coll and Bryce Cosby led the way with 11 and 10 tackles, respectively. Christian Albright added 1.5 tackles-for-loss, which included a sack and a forced fumble, which was recovered by the RedHawks.

Miami's Brett Gabbert completed 20 of his 24 attempts through the air for 207 yards and two touchdowns to lead the RedHawks. Eight of those connections were to Jack Sorenson, who had 138 receiving yards.

The Cardinals get a short break before returning to the field Wednesday, Nov. 2 at Akron.
