Northwoods -

Birds are racing the clock here in the Northwoods as they make their way out ahead of the cold weather. For most birds in the area, this migration began in mid-August ahead of the first hard frost. This means that the majority of the birds you're probably used to seeing outside are already a ways away.

"Right now bird populations are significantly down. If you take a bird hike right now, you're gonna get 10 or 15 species if you're lucky just because so many have already left," said John Bates, a naturalist.

But there's one bird that hasn't left quite yet. The iconic species of the Northwoods, the Loon, is still here and can be seen gathering in big groups at this time of year.

"They get together in large groups on big lakes like Trout Lake and Fence Lake for instance and you may see 50 to 100 gathered on these big lakes," said Bates.

They will be making their way out of here soon though. The adult loons depart in mid-October with their chicks following behind them about a month later.
