A shocking abduction, a daring escape, an elusive serial killer, and a path toward overcoming trauma are the focus of a brand new Oxygen special.
In "Escaping Captivity: The Kara Robinson Story," a two-hour special airing Sunday, September 26 at 7/6c on Oxygen, Kara Robinson Chamberlain recounts in vivid detail being taken at gun point from a friend’s front yard. Forced into in a cramped, dark storage container in her captor’s car, Kara instantly knew her life was in grave danger. In a moment she describes as a divine intervention, the 15-year-old realized she had to be her own victor and take her life back; she had to escape.
Kara suspects the adrenaline coursing through her body allowed her to remember countless details about her captor and her surroundings; information she hoped would eventually help identify her abductor when she escaped. Kara meticulously filed away information: from the serial number inside the dark container, to specific items inside her captor’s apartment – including caged animals, kitchen magnets and even strands of long, red hair in a hairbrush. After a harrowing 18 hours, Kara engineered her own incredible escape and led authorities back to the apartment of her captor.
There, they would find evidence linking Kara’s captor to a series of crimes far darker and more deadly than anyone ever imagined. In the following days, Kara would learn she escaped from serial killer, Richard Marc Evonitz.
Now a fierce advocate for survivors and an educator for those who work with them, Kara unveils details about her life as a vivacious teen, the kidnapping, the man who abducted her and she moved forward after her escape. The special features exclusive interviews with Kara’s parents, who recount the terrifying hours they spent fearing they would never see their daughter again, the high school boyfriend who supported Kara after her horrifying experience and law enforcement who were significantly aided in their search for Evonitz based on detailed information Kara provided after her daring escape.
“Escaping Captivity: The Kara Robinson Story” is produced by Marwar Junction Productions and Entertainment One with Elizabeth Smart, Kara Robinson Chamberlain, Allison Berkley, Joseph Freed, Tara Long, Geno McDermott and Carolyn Blackstone Day serving as executive producers.
