The Orioles September of spoiler potential has been a mixed bag so far. The 3-3 record against the Yankees this month is probably the closest they’re going to get to spoiling things for any one team, and the Yankees could well still make the postseason; they’re only a half-game out of a spot through yesterday. The O’s remain 0 for September against the Red Sox and Blue Jays, though, so the only thing they’re spoiling there is the hopes of the teams that want them to beat Boston or Toronto.
The latest loss was something of a familiar story for the 2021 team. On an individual basis, Cedric Mullins and Ryan Mountcastle had good games, each with two hits and a walk. Mullins stole bases #29 and #30. Mountcastle extended his O’s rookie home run record by hitting #30. Those things were nice. Then the rest of the lineup got five hits total, and two pitching prospects we’ve been hoping for in the future - Zac Lowther and Mike Baumann - did not have great days. One piece of silver lining for the loss, small as it is, is that it gave the Orioles a little bit more daylight in the race for the #1 pick in next year’s draft. The Diamondbacks knocked off the Astros, 6-4 in 10 innings, to improve their record to 48-100. That leaves them a full game behind the O’s for the #1 pick standings - and don’t forget the O’s hold the tiebreaker by virtue of a worse 2019 record. Each team has 14 games remaining on its schedule.
The Orioles try to avoid a sweep this afternoon with a scheduled 1:10 game. Another of those pitching prospects who’s struggled in 2021, Alexander Wells, makes the start for the O’s, with Nathan Eovaldi set to pitch for Boston.

The Orioles were most recently victorious on September 19 in the 2018 season, when they beat the Blue Jays, 2-1. DJ Stewart hit his first major league homer in the game, and O’s pitchers, led by Jimmy Yacabonis, held Jays batters to four hits.
