At the age of 23 years 77 days, an Illinois pig named Baby Jane has set a Guinness World Record. The pot-bellied pig has lived to be the oldest pig ever in captivity.
According to a report by Guinness World Records, the new record was verified on April 19, 2021. Baby Jane, born Feb. 1, 1998, was raised by and still lives with Patrick Cunningham and Stan Coffman, in Mundelein, Illinois.
Cunningham adopted her with the assistance of a friend from a rescue in Virginia, and brought her home when she was 8 weeks old, the report said.
Cunningham and Coffman have two sons and another pot-bellied pig named Lucy, that was added to the family in 2004. Lucy will be 17 this September.
The couple said Baby Jane prefers the creature comforts of home as opposed to the outdoors and can be found in their bed or on the couch when indoors.
“In our bed, she rests her head on our pillows and sprawls out, leaving little space for us. She’s literally a bed hog,” they said.
In her younger years, the couple said Baby Jane loved to shred blankets, but she’s usually very well behaved now, though she sometimes throws tantrums when she doesn’t get her way and will occasionally act out.
Tantrums may include “knocking something over, screaming, or in one case, going to the bathroom in her sister’s bed,” the couple shared.
The couple said the entire family pitches in to help with Baby Jane’s set routine.
“She gets up in the morning, potties, eats, and goes back to sleep until lunchtime. At lunchtime, same routine, potty, eat, sleep. Same routine with dinner. In the evening or on weekends we spend more time with her outside,” the couple said.
Cunningham and Coffman say Baby Jane’s mind is still very sharp, but her vitality has decreased over the years. While she still walks well, she occasionally needs a little assistance on stairs, “but she can do them herself,” they said.
Since they’re no longer comfortable boarding Baby Jane while they vacation. The couple has purchased an RV, and take the entire family, including the pigs on trips together. They call Baby Jane a “well-traveled” pig, and her favorite place is Key West. She loves the beach, they said.
“Baby Jane isn’t just intelligent, she is extremely affectionate and empathetic. She loves being with us and we love having her with us,” the couple said.
The Guinness World Record gives Cunningham and Coffman the opportunity to educate others about pot-bellied pigs. To prevent pigs from ending up in rescues and sanctuaries, the couple wants to spread awareness that there is no such thing as micro or teacup pigs — they will eventually grow into full-sized pigs, the report noted.
“We never would have dreamed we would have a pet living to 23+ years. It’s really a long commitment and they depend on you for everything. You have to be willing to commit the time to them,” they said.
