Bengali the tiger is making a big roar with her latest accomplishment – being the world’s oldest living tiger in captivity!
At the age of 25 years and 319 days, she lives in Tiger Creek Animal Sanctuary in Tyler, Texas, USA where she is cared for by the dedicated, animal-loving staff.
“Tiger Creek Animal Sanctuary seeks to provide a safe and secure environment for animals in need of rescue or rehabilitation while conserving endangered and threatened species. Typically, tigers live 15-20 years in captivity and only about 12 years in the wild. Our oldest resident, Bengali, has more than surpassed these expectations with her current age!”
Bengali first came to the zoo in 2000, where she showed signs of shyness and would often hide from visitors.
Over time however, she became acclimated to her new home, and can now be seen happily lounging in her yard area, interacting with guests at the sanctuary.
In fact, if one of her caretakers stops by she loves to give them tiger smiles, chuffs, and always has a word or two to say to them.
On a day to day in her life at the sanctuary, Bengali gets fed several meals, gives herself baths, and finds shady spots for her rather long cat naps.
Her favorite treat may be what you’ll typically see at your local ice cream parlor – she loves blood popsicles, and gets rather excited to eat them!
Although Bengali never had tiger cubs, she has spent the last two decades at the sanctuary being pampered by the on-site caretakers who love looking after her.
“The staff here provide meals to Bengali on a silver platter! Well, it’s stainless steel, but it’s silver in color anyway. She never goes hungry and never has to worry about where her next meal may come from.
“Bengali, along with all of the other residents at Tiger Creek, have constant access to fresh, clean water, spacious yards that are open to the sun and breeze with lots of shade trees, platforms to climb on and play under, pools to take a refreshing dip in during the summer months, logs to scratch her claws on, and all sorts of toys to play with.”
One of the staff’s favorite memories with Bengali was celebrating her 21st birthday.
Together they through a party which had a donated and sanitized empty keg, which Bengali playfully pounced and laid on for the rest of the day.
Now that she has been officially recognized with her Guinness World Records title, the Tiger Creek personnel are extremely excited to have a record-breaking tiger as part of their family.
“We are extremely honored and very proud to know we have the oldest living tiger in captivity. We care deeply for every animal at Tiger Creek, and keeping Bengali healthy and happy for so many years is an incredible accomplishment for the sanctuary, our staff, and of course, our Bengali.”
The Tiger Creek Animal Sanctuary wants to reinforce the importance of keeping endangered species in captivity, as they are key to successfully re-establishing viable populations in the wild, with the ultimate goal of labelling them as “endangered”.
“Every animal saved is one more chance to keep their species on this world, and everyone is a gift to us, the planet, and our future.”
Now Bengali is looking forward to celebrating her 26th birthday, which takes place 31 August this year. We can’t wait to see her increase her record title!
