Portland Public Schools Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero has hired a new deputy to lead the district’s instructional arm.
Shawn Bird has taken over the role previously held by Kregg Cuellar, who left to take a similar position with a district in Texas. Guerrero appointed Bird to Cuellar’s former job on July 13.
The school board unanimously voted to make it official on Tuesday. Bird will now oversee the district’s curriculum and instruction and supervise the team of regional superintendents who manage Portland Public Schools’ principals.
“In a relatively short amount of time, Dr. Bird has established himself as an essential leader in our organization,” Guerrero said.
Bird was previously the district’s chief of schools. Guerrero hired him in January of 2020, weeks before the coronavirus forced students to learn remotely for more than a year.
As chief of schools, Bird was instrumental in designing the district’s schedules as Portland Public Schools navigated the pandemic. He was also one of the district’s key negotiators as it bargained a return to classrooms with the union representing its teachers.
“It’s been quite a ride so far,” Bird told the board.
He’ll be Guerrero’s third deputy superintendent of instruction in just over two years.
Soon after he arrived in Portland, Guerrero tapped Forest Grove Superintendent Yvonne Curtis to serve as one of his two top lieutenants. The other, Claire Hertz, is still Portland Public Schools’ deputy superintendent of operations and oversees the district’s business and finances.
Curtis resigned from her position in April of 2019, citing “a number of challenging family situations” that required her “full attention and focus.” Months later, she was announced as the interim superintendent of the South Lane School District.
Guerrero then promoted Cuellar, his first chief of schools, to Curtis’s position.
