International House of Prayer Ministries senior pastor, Bryan Nerren, recently spoke to the Rotary Club, telling members of his 7 months of captivity in India.
While he’s always known the dangers associated with his global missionary work, Nerren said recently how he never fathomed he'd get so close to martyrdom after 17 years with Asian Children’s Education Fellowship (ACEF)-a non profit which he founded.
Nerren, who was released in May, talked in hindsight about his “Out of India” situation, which began in October 2019, while he was passing through the country. He and some fellow ministers were on their way to Nepal-a trip which had become pretty routine for Nerren for decades; his wife, Rhonda, did not make the journey last year.
He explained what happened. The room was silent as he began his journey back to South Asia.
“We had $40,000, but it was the three of us, going to meet 10 more people. I had $20,000 . . . Drew and Jim [Gore] had $10,000 apiece . . . declared it. Four different guys asked us the same questions. We never talked about declaration or illegal money or what needed to happen. They only cared about two things: ‘Are you a Christian?’ and ‘Are you going to talk to Christians in India?’ The answer was yes on both of them.”
Soon the entourage was on the way to International Airport in Bagdogra, where as soon as they hit the ground, customs grabbed the three of them. They were in eight hours of very Third World interrogation and eventually, headed for jail, Nerren said.
After all those months, Nerren believes he was targeted merely because he was a Christian. It’s an experience he won’t likely forget and plans to continue to support the other ministries there.
“We teach teachers to teach, that’s the only thing we do. I’ll never go back to India or Nepal either one. Legally, I can go back. When the judge released me Friday [May 15], he said, ‘all charges are dropped, everything is cleared, you’re guilty of nothing, and if you want to come back next year, you’ll be treated good, different.’”
