The animal shown in the image is not a real species of bird, according to experts. The image is fabricated.
Image does not show actual bird species
Dominique Homberger, a comparative anatomist at Louisiana State University, told USA TODAY that the bird in the image doesn't exist.
"In my opinion, this is a somewhat skillful artificial picture," she said in an email. "I do not know any such species. Furthermore, the feet of the bird are unnaturally positioned and seem to be glued on top of natural toes. The leg on the left in the pictures has strange growths and is shorter. The stripes are too regular. There is no 'pyjama bird.'"
Pat Leonard, a spokesperson for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, also told USA TODAY the image does not show a real animal.
"There’s no question this a fake bird − no such species exists," she said in an email. "There are enough gorgeous birds in the world that we don’t have to make up new ones. This also does a disservice to those who are earnestly trying to learn more about birds. It’s hard enough without having to navigate around these false birds."
Chad Witko, an avian biologist at the National Audubon Society, likewise told USA TODAY that the image does not show a real species of bird.
The "pyjama bird" does not appear in The Cornell Lab of Ornithology Birds of the World database or Avibase: The World Bird Database, which is hosted by Birds Canada.
