The father of Liverpool F.C. forward Luis Diaz has been released by a Colombian rebel group after being taken hostage in October, CNN reported Thursday.
Luis Manuel Diaz was released on Thursday in Valledupar, Colombia. The National Liberation Army (ELN) handed him over to representatives from the United Nations and Catholic Church.
“We thank God for the release of Mr. Luis Diaz!” the Colombian Episcopal Conference posted on Twitter. “With him are already Mons. Francisco Ceballos, bishop of Riohacha and Mons. Héctor Henao, delegate for Church-State relations, who formed the humanitarian commission in charge of facilitating his release.”
On Oct. 28, Diaz’s parents were taken by the gunmen on motorcycles as they were traveling home in the family’s hometown of Barrancas. Diaz’s mother was rescued hours later, but his father remained in captivity.
After learning of the situation, Diaz traveled to Colombia to be with his family. His missed multiple matches for his club before returning to action last Sunday against Luton Town. He scored an equalizing goal in stoppage time and used the moment to reveal a t-shirt under his uniform that read “LIBERTAD PARA PAPA” — which translates to “Freedom for Dad.”
He also took to Twitter following the match to urge the ELN to return his father. At the time, a representative of the group told CNN it would release him “as soon as possible.”
Diaz has not posted on the site since the match, but Liverpool thanked authorities for their help in returning the 26-year-old’s father.
“We are delighted by the news of @LuisFDiaz19’s father’s safe return,” the club said, “and we thank all those involved in securing his release.”
