Yolo Audubon Society set for 52nd annual Christmas Bird Count - Woodland Daily Democrat

jawawuts.blogspot.com

The Yolo Audubon Society invites the public to join its 52nd Annual Christmas Bird Count, which will take place on Dec. 18, rain or shine.

According to an Audobon Society press release, the Christmas Bird Count dates back to 1971 and is one of California’s longest-running bird counts. Using the data collected over the past 51 years, the society has identified trends for several bird species and relate them to conservation issues.

Christmas Bird Count typically observes over 140 species and has about 80 participants, making it one of the largest inland counts in California and the Central Valley. Information collected during the count has also provided important data on the effects of West Nile Virus, climate change, and the loss of grassland habitat on bird populations.

The Christmas Bird Count encompasses a 15-mile diameter count circle and is centered southwest of Winters, California. It is divided into 10 areas and spans parts of Yolo, Solano, and Napa Counties. If you are interested in volunteering for the Christmas bird count, please contact the area Leader for the region you are interested in.

A list of area leaders and their contact information can be found on the Yolo Audubon Website at yoloaudubon.org or Facebook at facebook.com/yoloaudubonsociety. Leaders prefer to get their count teams established early, so society encourages anyone interested not to wait.

On the evening of Dec.18, those interested are welcome to join the Count Compilation meeting at the Davis Senior Center, Valente Room, 646 A Street. Doors open at 5 p.m. for a potluck at 6 p.m. and the compilation meeting from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

In preparation for the Christmas bird count, a Bird ID workshop will convene via Zoom at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 14. The workshop will serve as a refresher on bird identification and a discussion of recent count trends, including a review of climate change and forest fire impacts on the count circle.

For more information on how to participate in these events, go to the group’s websites; yoloaudubon.org or facebook.com/yoloaudubonsociety.

Yolo Audubon, a chapter of the National Audubon Society, is a non-profit organization whose mission is to foster an appreciation of birds and conservation in Yolo County.

The group offers live and virtual events in an effort to educate and inform the public about birds and birdwatching. More information on birds in Yolo County is available on the websites.
