Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker Concept Art Has Chewbacca in Torturous Captivity - CBR - Comic Book Resources

jawawuts.blogspot.com

Concept art from 2019's Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker depicts Chewbacca in the clutches of the First Order.

The artwork was shared by concept artist Jon McCoy and is some of the earliest images he produced for The Rise of Skywalker. The art is purposely rough and unfinished, but the figure of the Wookiee Chewbacca is unmistakable as he is hanging from a set of restraints. McCoy says that the art department was asked to design "the machine that would be holding [Chewbacca] in these terrible stress positions!" With this instruction in mind, McCoy worked to devise a "very iconic and unique pose that Chewie would be held in, to make the shots memorable."

In The Rise of Skywalker, Chewbacca was captured by the Knights of Ren in the Pasaana desert and imprisoned on the Star Destroyer Steadfast. It was during this imprisonment that the torture scene would have taken place. Although McCoy's early concept art shows unknown figures circling the restrained Chewbacca, it was due to be Kylo Ren himself that led the torture and interrogation.

Not only did the scene make the script, but according to Chewbacca actor Joonas Suotamo, it was actually filmed. Suotamo is not certain why the scene was cut from the final edit, but he suggested that it was either too dark or didn't fit in a movie that would see Kylo Ren turn back to the light and once again become Ben Solo. According to the actor, the scene was difficult to film and he described his scene partner, Adam Driver, as "truly sociopathic" in the part of Kylo Ren. Concept artist Ryan Church also shared his own illustrations for the scene, which he said "could have been one of the most intense, meaningful moments of the Trilogy."

It's not unusual for Star Wars to produce concept art that doesn't make it to the screen. For the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, a series of concept art was produced that showed the Jedi Master Plo Kloon coming to the aid of Din Djarin and Grogu, instead of Luke Skywalker. This was created to keep the appearance of Skywalker a secret until the episode aired.

Other concert art for The Rise of Skywalker depicted a different death scene for Leia Organa. In the movie, Leia passed away in the Resistance base on Ajan Kloss, shortly after guiding her son to his redemption. However, the concept art showed Leia lying in her stateroom on the Tantive IV, the same ship where audiences were first introduced to her in 1977's A New Hope.

The Rise of Skywalker and the rest of the Skywalker Saga can be streamed on Disney+.
