The Broomfield Bird Club is pleased to announce our next Zoom presentation on Tuesday at 7 p.m., featuring Dave Johnson. Visit our website BroomfieldBirdClub.com and click on the Zoom link to participate. Set your alarm for 6:50 p.m., Tuesday, so that you’ll remember.

Johnson’s concern for animal welfare started at an early age. At 15, he was able to participate in making a difference as he was given a chance as an animal volunteer at the Western North Carolina Nature Center. Johnson majored in wildlife biology at UNC-Chapel Hill, and he was a bear biologist in Alaska for a year. Since 1998, Johnson has been a Pachyderm zookeeper in Denver, specializing in elephant, rhino and hippo care. He has more than 31 years of animal experience.

Johnson formed a worldwide nonprofit in 2014 called KADF: Katie Adamson Conservation Fund. It concentrates on the conservation of penguins, macaws, quetzals, hornbills, curassows, Bengal floricans and petrels. As well as being the director of KADF, he has been to Nepal 11 times, where KADF helped build a wildlife veterinary hospital which opened last year.

Johnson will talk about penguins in South Africa, hornbills in Nepal, native birds in Costa Rica, macaw recovery in Costa Rica, petrels and albatross efforts in Hawaii. He also supports our own Nature’s Educators with Emily Davenport, who is a frequent speaker for our Zoom presentations.

Johnson’s husband, Ray Lucero, serves as the assistant director of KACF. Johnson will be climbing Kilimanjaro again this autumn with a group of conservationists.

Broomfield Bird Club is a social club, open to anyone interested in finding out more about birds and their habitats. We are an all-volunteer board and registered as a nonprofit organization. Yearly dues are $20 per family, and are used for speakers, bird-related local rehabs, as well as operational expenses for the club. We have presentations every second Tuesday of the month (with exceptions) and bird walks every second Saturday of the month, with intermittent bird walks whenever someone would like to lead.
