From her early memories playing college basketball to her relationship with soccer's Megan Rapinoe, former UConn basketball player Sue Bird shared her experiences in an interview on "60 Minutes" Sunday.
Early in the interview, journalist Jon Wertheim asked Bird about the most memorable thing that UConn coach Geno Auriemma told her.
"Early in my sophomore year, he kind of, like, pulled me into his office. He’s basically like ‘You know, everything that happens out there is your fault, right? Everything. If so and so turns it over, that’s your fault. You need to take ownership of everything that’s happening out there’,” recalled Bird during the interview with CBS.
During her years at UConn, Bird helped lead a 136-9 record and two NCAA titles from 1999 to 2002. Bird moved on to the Seattle Storm where she's been a player for 19 seasons. She has won five Olympic gold medals and four WNBA championships.
Another topic of the interview was her relationship with professional soccer player Megan Rapinoe and her struggles coming out as gay.
"I was kind of, like, looking myself in the mirror, like, 'No, no, no, no, you're not gay. This is not you.' So nobody in that moment, not my family, not my friends, nobody knew anything about that part of my life," said Bird.
The basketball player made her relationship with Rapinoe, who has lived in Greenwich, public in 2017 and the couple got engaged in 2020.
Lastly, Wertheim asked Bird about her retirement plans and if they were affected by the Seattle fans' support. Last September, when the Storm lost a playoff game, Seattle fans chanted "one more year" for Bird to stay with the team for another season.
"It pretty much made the decision. To hear the fans chant, it was kind of like, ‘Wait. They know it too? Like, they want me back?,’”
While Bird hasn't made a statement of when she's going to retire, she said that it's likely that she won't be around for the next Olympics in Paris.
