WILLMAR — The long-standing tradition of the National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count will continue in the Willmar area, but with some added precautions due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Organizers of the Willmar area count announced that the count will be held on Saturday, Dec. 18.
Due to high positivity rates for COVID-19, especially in Kandiyohi County, the organizers decided to suspend both the pre-count gathering to coordinate the day’s activities and the mid-morning gathering for coffee and hot chocolate.
As always, anyone interested in participating is encouraged to do so. Those interested in getting out in the field are asked to email either Joel Schmidt at joelallenschmidt@gmail.com or Joel Halbritter at jchalbritter@gmail.com.
Those interested in counting by watching their bird feeders are encouraged to do so as well.
Participants who are fully vaccinated are welcome to join at 5 p.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church on the day of the count for a meal, but should RSVP ahead of time.
This will be the 60th annual count conducted in the Willmar area. It is the 122nd year of the national count overseen by the National Audubon Society.
