BOISE, Idaho – Boise State gymnastics head coach Tina Bird announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, Wednesday.
Emma Loyim (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), Elaina McGovern (Richmond, Ky.) and Alyssa Vulaj (Yorba Linda, Calif.) will each join the Broncos as freshmen for the 2021-22 season.
"This is a phenomenal signing class for Boise State, but not just from a competition standpoint," Bird said. "They are each outstanding competitors, but they're also incredibly successful from an academic standpoint, which will allow them to immediately fit within the culture of our program."
Loyim, who is coached by Ashley Umberger, Heather Moroz and Faith Baranowwski at North Stars Gymnastics Academy, was a Level 10 Junior Olympic National Championships qualifier in both 2018 and 2019, finishing 10th on beam in the latter appearance. She also captured bars and all-around titles at the New Jersey Level 10 State Championship in 2018, and a bars title at the Level 10 Region 7 Regional Championships in 2019.
Academically, Loyim carries a 4.2 grade-point average, and was named to her high school's honor roll following her freshman, sophomore and junior years.
"Emma is a strong all-around gymnast who will make an immediate impact on our team," Bird said. "She is clean and powerful and has a bright future as a Bronco."
McGovern, who is coached by Scott Austin and Natalie White at Legacy All Sports, was a Level 10 Junior Olympic National Championships qualifier in both 2018 and 2019. She finished 10th on beam in the former appearance, and seventh in the all-round, fifth on floor and sixth on beam in the latter. At the Level 10 Region 5 Regional Championships, she finished seventh in both the all-around and on beam and eighth on floor in 2018, and fifth in the all-around, second on floor and seven on bars en route to being named a Region 5 All-Star Team member in 2019. She swept the Kentucky Level 10 State Championships in 2019, finishing first in the all-around and first on vault, bars, beam and floor, and finished first on bars, second on vault and third in the all-around in 2018. This past season, she placed first in the all-around at the Arnold Classic, Elevate the Stage and Nashville Nights, and was also a Level 10 Team Captain.
Academically, McGovern has been a member of the National Honor Society since 2018, is part of her school's Advanced Cohort Program and was an AP Scholar with honors in 2020.
"Elaina is a seasoned competitor with a ton of experience and success as a club gymnast," Bird said. "She has some unique skills on each event that will surely be crowd pleasers."
Vulaj, who is coached by Whitney Dames, Hayley Butler, Steph Calvert, Tom Wakeling and Rick Watson at Wildfire Gymnastics, qualified for the Level 10 Junior Olympics National Championships in 2019. She also qualified for the Level 10 Region 1 Regional Championships in both 2018 and 2019, finishing second on beam in the former appearance, and for the Southern California Level 10 State Championships in both 2018 and 2019.
Academically, Vulaj is a member of her school's Principal's Honor Roll, maintaining a 4.0 GPA this past year. Emily Lopez and Dani Nakayama, teammates of Vulaj's at Wildfire Gymnastics, are also on the Broncos' gymnastics team.
"Alyssa comes to us from an amazing and highly-technical club in Southern California," Bird said. "She is an up-and-coming star, performing routines with great difficulty, and competes with a consistency that will benefit our program."
